This hand-colored woodcut isn’t a 20th-century mind-bender—it’s from 1567. Lorenz Stoer, a German artist trained in the shadow of Dürer, created these architectural fever dreams for intarsia artists (aka the inlay artisans of Renaissance luxury furniture).

The series, Geometria et Perspectiva, was never meant to teach perspective. It simply dropped you into it—headfirst. What you’re seeing: polyhedrons, scrolls, ruins, and surreal geometry collaged into dreamlike Renaissance landscapes.

Stoer’s only known published work, this series was part blueprint, part visual riddle. Its haunting beauty lies in its refusal to explain itself.
